Hyundai Recalls 84K Genesis Vehicles Over Airbag Issues

For the better part of two years, dozens of carmakers have dealt with a slew of airbag issues — including the massive Takata defect. Now, problems with the safety devices have led to the recall of 84,000 Hyundai vehicles.

The recall covers 84,500 model year Hyundai Genesis Coupe vehicles that could contain front passenger airbags that can malfunction.

According to a notice [PDF] posted with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.

In the event of a crash, a disconnected harness would cause the airbag to incorrectly deploy, such as when a child is in the front seat and the bag should not deploy, or fail to deploy with enough force to protect and adult passenger.

Both scenarios increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant, Hyundai says.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by Hyundai in December and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting.
