British Airways Flight Diverted After 25 Crew Members, Passengers Become Sick

The long trip from San Francisco to London became even longer for nearly 400 passengers on a British Airways flight after the plane had to make an emergency landing when dozens of passengers and crew members became ill.

The flight was diverted to Vancouver late Monday evening, where 25 crew members and passengers were taken to local hospitals for smoke inhalation, CNN reports.

A spokesperson for area hospitals tells CBC News in British Columbia that those who became sick were taken to three hospitals. So far, 20 patients sent to Richmond Hospital and to Vancouver General Hospital had all been treated and released by 8 a.m. ET.

A spokesperson for the airline could not provide a cause of the issue, noting that the investigation is ongoing.

However, they did confirm that a “number” of people had been treated after becoming ill, including at least two passengers.

The airline says that it arranged hotel accommodations for the affected travelers and will rebook them on alternative flights as soon as possible.
